The licensed pharmacist who is responsible to the provincial College of Pharmacists for the day-to-day compliance of a pharmacy. Pharmacy legislation generally requires every location to have a Designated Manager (the title varies by province — for example, "pharmacy manager," "licensee," or "pharmacist-in-charge").
The role matters greatly in estate planning: on the death or incapacity of a pharmacy owner, the executor or attorney must promptly appoint a replacement Designated Manager and notify the College, or the pharmacy's licence can be suspended and operations forced to close. A will or Power of Attorney that authorizes the executor or attorney to appoint and retain a Designated Manager preserves continuity of patient care and protects goodwill.
